Beneath the Green

About this piece

Pink flower spikes punctuate a dense arrangement of tropical foliage, their delicate forms set against broad, luminous leaves. Transmitted sunlight reveals fine parallel veins, while deep shadows give the overlapping greenery depth and weight.

The story

I was drawn first to the light passing through the leaves, turning their broad surfaces into fields of green threaded with fine lines. Then I noticed the pink flowers rising from the darker foliage, small but unmistakable. I framed them to one side, leaving room for the leaves and their shadows to unfold. What held me there was the contrast: the flowers quietly distinct, the greenery filling almost every part of the frame.
