About this piece

A breaking wave spans the frame, its amber-toned flanks enclosing a central burst of white foam. Bands of blue water, silver-gray wash, and sand give the photograph a measured horizontal structure, contrasting with the turbulence of the surf.

The story

I watched the water rise into a low wall, its color shifting from blue to amber as it folded toward the sand. For an instant, the two sides held their curves while the middle fell apart in white spray. That was the moment I wanted: not an unbroken wave, but the brief coexistence of shape and collapse. Below it, the previous wash was already thinning into delicate lines of foam.
