The Unfolding Light

Sunlight passes through fern leaflets, revealing fine veins and delicately curled edges in luminous yellow-green. A sharply defined diagonal frond emerges from softer layers of foliage, balancing botanical detail with fields of color and shadow.

The story

I was drawn to the way the light seemed to come from inside the ferns. Moving closer, I let the surrounding foliage soften until one diagonal stem held the frame. Its curled tip and translucent leaflets offered two stages of the same unfolding. I wanted to keep that small distinction visible, while allowing the shadows to remain deep enough to give the green its extraordinary brightness.
