About this piece

Mike Gedj frames a dense stand of bamboo as a rhythm of green and gold, its segmented stems alternating with dark recesses. Scratched names and initials interrupt the natural surface, bringing traces of human presence into the repeating botanical structure.

The story

I was drawn first to the bands of gold running through the green, then to the small inscriptions scattered across the bamboo. Moving closer, I let the stems fill the frame until there was no horizon, only their leaning lines and the darkness between them. The names seemed almost incidental at first, but they changed the picture for me: a living thicket carrying the marks of people who had paused here.
