The story

Late July light settles on the white plaster and the cat’s folded paws. Small white flowers spill beside the planter, their delicate blooms threaded with dry golden stems. The cat faces outward with half-narrowed eyes, its tail resting along the ledge, and the threshold seems briefly to belong to no one else.
