A Mast Against Gold
MG-1929
Category: Tidal Light
April 2021
About this piece
A sharply tilted sailboat occupies the right side of a broad coastal view, balanced by dense foliage and exposed shoreline on the left. The low sun casts a golden reflection across blue shallows, while the mast draws a long diagonal through the open sky. Small boats punctuate the distant horizon, lending scale to the quiet scene.
The story
On this first day of April, gold gathers along the horizon and spreads across the rippled shallows. At the shore, wet stones and tangled branches hold pockets of shadow. The sailboat leans beneath its bare mast, its rigging tracing fine lines against the luminous sky. Farther out, small boats mark the boundary between water and air. Each ripple breaks the sun’s reflection into another brief fragment of light.
