A Crown Of Light

About this piece
Seen from below, a coconut palm rises diagonally into a radiating crown of fronds, with clusters of green coconuts nestled near the trunk. Warm sunlight picks out the ridged bark and gilds the narrow leaflets, while rounded foliage punctuated by red leaves fills the lower right. Blue sky and soft clouds open between the overlapping canopies, giving the dense composition a sense of air and height.
The story
On this February day, light gathers along the palm fronds in slender gold lines. The eye follows the rough trunk upward, past its dark scars, to the coconuts held close beneath the crown. Beside it, broad leaves catch the same light differently, their green surfaces interrupted by flashes of orange and red. Through the spaces between them, the sky remains a cool, open blue.
