The story

July light settles across the white walls, tracing their rounded shoulders. A yellow jar rests on its side beside the stairway, its dark mouth turned toward the passing steps. Above it, a cactus holds its small green paddles against the blue. Far below, ships occupy the water like pale, intricate miniatures. The stairs turn out of sight, leaving the sea open before them.
