A Lattice Of Light

About this piece
A tightly framed palm frond fills the photograph, its dark central stem crossing diagonally through rows of elongated leaflets. Strong backlighting turns the foliage luminous yellow-green, revealing fine veins and scattered reddish marks. Narrow openings onto blue sky punctuate the repeating forms, lending the composition a measured, vibrant stillness.
The story
Late August light passes through the palm frond, turning each leaflet into a thin pane of green and gold. The eye follows one bright vein outward, then returns to the dark stem that gathers the pattern together. Small rust-colored marks interrupt the orderly bands, giving the luminous surface a weathered particularity. Beyond the leaf, the sky appears only in slivers, enough to suggest the open air.
