About this piece

A deeply twisted evergreen anchors an arid landscape of red rock, sandy ground, and scattered shrubs. Strong sunlight reveals the fibrous grain of its trunks and the layered texture of the rock face, while branching shadows spread across the foreground. The broad crown balances the rising stone at left, lending the composition a sense of rooted persistence.

The story

September light settles into the grooves of the wood, drawing pale ridges out of the darker bark. Beside the tree, red stone rises in shelves and folds, its broad surface answering the tangled lines of the branches. Green foliage breaks the blue sky into small, irregular windows. Across the dry ground, the tree gathers its many limbs into a single pool of patterned shade.
