About this piece

A deeply furrowed tree trunk fills the right foreground, its bare limbs reaching across a black-and-white landscape of exposed rock and scattered shrubs. Strong sunlight articulates the fractured cliff at left and the grain of the wood, while distant rock spires sit beneath bright clouds. The enclosing forms give the open terrain a sense of shelter and austere stillness.

The story

September light falls across the bare stone, catching the ridges of a twisted trunk. One long limb reaches toward the cliff, making a threshold without closing the sky. Beyond it, shrubs gather among the rocks and distant spires rise beneath banks of cloud. The eye follows the open ground inward, leaving the dark grooves of the wood for the brightness beyond.
