A broken opening beneath a brick vault frames a sandy shoreline, a small cabin boat resting ashore, and the sea beyond. In black and white, light picks out the rough masonry and scattered bricks, contrasting the enclosed foreground with the pale expanse of sky. The composition draws the eye from fractured edges toward an uninterrupted horizon.

The story

At the beginning of January, light reaches beneath the brick vault and settles across the sand. The broken wall opens onto a sea that appears almost motionless at this distance. A small boat rests ashore beside scattered timber, its cabin windows dark against its pale hull. Rows of bricks curve overhead, while beyond their jagged edge the sky has room to spread.
