About this piece

A deeply furrowed tree dominates the left foreground of this black-and-white desert landscape, its branching silhouette balanced by open sky and a distant rock escarpment. Strong sunlight articulates the grain of exposed wood and the layered stone, while scattered shrubs, slender clouds, and a small crescent moon lend the scene a spacious stillness.

The story

September light rests on the exposed rock, drawing fine shadows through the tree’s twisted grain. Its branches spread across the sky while broken lengths of wood lie among the stones below. Beyond them, the cliff holds its broad, dark seams against the pale ground. A crescent moon hangs above it all, almost lost in the daylight. The eye moves from bark to stone to sky, each surface yielding to a greater quiet.
