About this piece
A gnarled tree rises from sloping rock above a landscape of cliffs and distant ridges. Strong sunlight articulates the grain of its trunk and the fractured stone, while the black-and-white rendering draws their textures together. Set to the right against an expansive sky, the tree balances the massive rock formation at left with a quieter, branching presence.
The story
September light falls across the exposed ledge, catching each ridge of bark and broken edge of stone. The tree stands where the rock tilts toward the canyon, its irregular branches opening into the sky. Above its crown, a small moon is barely brighter than the surrounding gray. The eye travels outward to distant ridges, then returns to the trunk and the narrow place where it meets the ground.
