About this piece

A gnarled tree rises from an expanse of fractured, layered rock, its fine branches sharply defined against a broad sky. Strong light reveals the textures of bark and stone, while branching shadows spread across the left foreground. The black-and-white composition balances the tree’s intricate silhouette with open sky, giving the exposed landscape a spare, enduring presence.

The story

September light falls across the rock shelves, catching each ridge and split in the tree’s weathered trunk. At its foot, a compact shrub gathers a dense pattern of slender stems. A fallen length of wood curves through the foreground, echoing the living branches above. Small clouds punctuate the sky, and the eye moves between their softness and the hard edges of stone.
