About this piece

A broad natural rock arch spans the frame, enclosing a distant landscape of red canyon walls, mesas, and deeply cut ravines. Strong sunlight reveals the layered texture of the golden stone, while its shaded underside marks a threshold between the close foreground and the immense terrain beyond.

The story

September light rests on the stone, picking out thin layers and the edges of fractures. Beneath the arch, shadow gathers into a long, uneven band. The eye passes through this narrow opening and travels across rust-red slopes toward distant blue-violet ridges. Close rock and far horizon hold together for a moment, making the canyon's immensity feel almost within reach.
