About this piece

A branching conifer anchors the left foreground above a broad canyon of layered red cliffs and flat-topped mesas. Strong sunlight illuminates the orange rock ledge and green foliage, while deep shadows articulate the distant walls. The diagonal foreground opens toward an expansive sky, balancing the intimacy of the tree with the scale of the landscape.

The story

September light lies bright across the stone, tracing pale seams beneath the tree. Its branches reach over the drop, carrying small patches of green into the canyon’s red expanse. Across the open distance, cliff faces alternate between sunlit ridges and cool shadow. White clouds gather above the mesas, their soft contours a quiet counterpoint to the fractured rock.
