About this piece

Closely spaced sandstone walls rise above a sandy passage, their fine bands sweeping into folds and projecting fins. Light from above illuminates the central rock in vivid orange, while violet and burgundy shadows frame the vertical composition. The enclosed view gives the stone a sculptural presence and the passage a deep stillness.

The story

On this September day, light reaches into the narrow canyon and gathers along an edge of stone. Orange slips between shaded folds, tracing layers too fine to follow far with the eye. Below, pale sand rests beneath the towering walls. The passage bends out of sight, keeping its next chamber of light hidden.
