The story

September light spreads across the desert, catching gold in the low roadside growth. The highway drops away and rises again, its painted lines drawing closer until they almost disappear. Small roadside shelters sit beneath a sky that seems to have room for every passing cloud. Ahead, the rock towers hold their uneven edges against the blue, and distance becomes the quiet measure of the journey.
