About this piece

Seen from below, the striated walls of a slot canyon sweep around a slender opening of blue sky. Brilliant light turns the upper stone gold and orange, while recessed folds deepen into red and violet. The ascending composition balances the weight of rock with the openness of sky.

The story

September light enters through a narrow seam overhead. It catches the sandstone ridges, leaving each hollow to hold its own shade of red. Fine lines travel across the walls like ripples, bending around ledges and disappearing beneath overhangs. Above these enclosing curves, a strip of blue offers the eye a quiet way out.
