About this piece

Seen from below, the striated walls of a slot canyon curve around an irregular opening of blue sky. Sunlight turns exposed sandstone gold and orange, while recessed folds deepen into burgundy shadow. The vertical composition draws the eye upward through layered contours, balancing enclosure with a sense of release.

The story

On this September day, the sky narrows to a blue ribbon between walls of stone. Light catches a ridge and spreads gold across its fine-grained surface, leaving the neighboring hollow dark. Each curve carries lines that bend together like the grain of folded cloth. Above the enclosing rock, a small tuft of vegetation reaches into the opening. The eye follows it toward the brightness, where the canyon briefly lets go.
