About this piece

Seen from below, sculpted canyon walls enclose irregular openings of vivid blue sky. Sunlight illuminates fine bands and sweeping edges in gold, orange, and pale pink, while recessed surfaces deepen to burgundy and violet. The vertical composition gathers these overlapping curves into a quiet study of enclosure and light.

The story

September light reaches into the narrow opening, catching the stone along its folded edges. Fine lines run across the walls, bending with each hollow and projecting ledge. Above, the blue sky appears in separate pieces, held apart by the weight of rock. The eye follows one luminous curve upward, then rests in the shade beneath it.
