About this piece

A low sun appears through an opening in dense foliage, its light reflected in the water beyond. A broad, diagonal trunk anchors the foreground, while branching leaves frame a sky graded from gold to pink. Saturated color and sharply defined bark give this quiet waterside scene a vivid, tactile presence.

The story

In these first days of January, the year opens here in green and gold. Branches overlap like a screen, leaving a small passage for the eye to reach the water. The sun rests above the distant dark shoreline, with a bright reflection below. For a moment, the tangled foreground and the open horizon seem to hold the same stillness.
