About this piece

Sculpted sandstone walls overlap within a narrow canyon, their fine striations tracing sweeping curves and folded edges. Brilliant amber light illuminates the recessed rock while the foreground settles into rose, burgundy, and shadow. The vertical composition draws the eye through the luminous gap, lending the enclosed space a monumental stillness.

The story

September light finds a narrow way into the stone. Along the upper walls, gold gathers in the grooves; below, the curves deepen into muted rose. A central ridge rises like a fold of heavy cloth, its edge briefly pale against the glow. The eye follows that edge into the passage, where brightness narrows and the rock closes around it.
