About this piece

Seen from below, sculpted sandstone walls surround an irregular opening of clear blue sky. Sunlight illuminates the upper curves in brilliant orange, while the nearer surfaces deepen into burgundy and violet. Fine striations and sweeping diagonals give the enclosed composition a sense of movement and quiet grandeur.

The story

On this September day, the sky appears as a blue ribbon held between folds of stone. Light catches the upper edges, leaving the recesses in wine-dark shade. Fine lines follow each bend, drawing the eye across surfaces that seem almost gathered like cloth. Above the enclosure, the clear opening offers a small, luminous measure of distance.
