About this piece

An upward view through a slot canyon reveals sweeping sandstone walls enclosing a vivid opening of blue sky. Sunlight turns the upper surfaces gold and orange, while rose-colored bands descend into burgundy shadow. A sharp foreground ridge draws the eye upward, giving the enclosing curves a sculptural, almost sheltering presence.

The story

September light enters through a narrow opening and gathers on the high sandstone walls. Below, the rock folds into shadow, its fine bands running like grain through carved wood. The eye follows a slender ridge toward the blue, passing from muted rose into brilliant amber. For a moment, the sky seems held within the stone.
