About this piece

Seen from below, layered sandstone walls sweep around a narrow opening of blue sky. Sunlight ignites the upper ridges in orange while the nearer surfaces soften into rose and violet shadow, their fine striations guiding the eye through an enclosing composition.

The story

September light reaches into the canyon, touching the high edges before fading across the lower folds. A thin ribbon of blue sky separates one curve of stone from another. The walls seem to billow, yet every ridge remains still. In this close enclosure, the eye follows the smallest lines until they disappear into shadow.
