About this piece

Seen from below, sculpted sandstone walls enclose a winding opening of pale sky. Sunlight illuminates their fine striations in amber and orange, while broad surfaces recede into muted violet-brown shadow. The vertical composition draws the eye through alternating constrictions and openings, lending the enclosed space a quiet grandeur.

The story

On this September day, light enters the canyon in narrow folds. It catches a projecting edge, then spreads across the sandstone in a wash of orange. Layered lines curve around each hollow, giving solid rock the appearance of gathered cloth. Above, the pale sky remains a slender opening between walls that nearly meet. The eye follows that opening upward, leaving the deepest shadows behind.
