About this piece

An upward view through a narrow sandstone canyon reveals sweeping walls etched with fine, parallel striations. Reflected light warms the left-hand curves to orange and red, while the broad central face holds cooler violet tones. Small openings of blue sky punctuate the enclosing rock, lending depth and brilliance to an otherwise hushed composition.

The story

September daylight enters through slender openings, touching the stone with amber and leaving its deeper folds in shadow. The eye follows a pale ridge upward, where its curve disappears beneath an overhanging wall. Fine lines run across the sandstone like threads drawn taut. Beyond this close enclosure, a fragment of blue sky offers a sudden sense of distance.
