Where Walls Keep Watch

About this piece

Large painted eyes and interlocking graphic patterns cover the boarded facade of a two-story building, illuminated by warm, angled sunlight. Repeating pillars and balcony rails recede toward the left, balancing the murals’ saturated reds, yellows, and blues with deep architectural shadow. Weeds along the cracked pavement lend the unpeopled scene a sense of stillness and weathering.

The story

September light falls across the painted facade, catching the rough grain of boards and the edges of brick pillars. Beneath a sweep of red pattern, an enormous eye seems to watch the empty pavement. The balcony rails draw long lines away from it, repeating until the details grow small. Weeds rise through the cracks below, their fine shadows joining the painted marks.
