About this piece

An ornate stone building rises into a vivid blue sky, its columned tower crowned by a golden figure and balanced by a steep gold-colored roof at left. Bright light articulates the carved facade, while leafy trees soften the lower and right edges of the upward-looking composition.

The story

August light gathers on the golden roof and catches the small figure high above the stone columns. Below, green foliage crowds the edges of the building, interrupting its measured rows of windows. White clouds spread across the blue, their soft contours answering the sharp points of the turrets. The eye climbs from leaf to ledge to crown, finding a quiet interval of sky above the city.
