The story

August light gathers in the narrow lanes between the pilings. Small tufts of green take hold on their worn tops, suspended above the gold. Across the water, glass and masonry catch the last warmth while the shoreline trees deepen into shadow. The rows lead outward, then disappear into a distance where the city seems briefly still.
