The story

Late July light rests sharply on the wall, bringing every grain of plaster and chipped edge of stone into view. Above the closed door, two lanterns remain unlit against the blue. A small sign reserves entry for hotel guests, while the brass-colored handle catches a bright glint. The shadow falls like a second, uneven doorway across the white panels; whatever lies beyond stays out of sight.
