About this piece

A weathered wooden double door, its tall openings crossed by diamond lattice, frames a narrow flight of stone steps. Strong sunlight picks out the pale threshold and ochre-stained walls, while the angled right-hand door draws the eye into the passage. Repeated verticals and worn surfaces lend the composition a quiet, measured intimacy.

The story

July light rests on the threshold and reaches up the uneven steps. One door stands open, leaving a slender route between shaded wood and bright plaster. Beyond it, a shuttered window holds its small pattern of horizontal lines above the crossing diagonals of the lattice. The eye climbs slowly, following the softened edges of stone until the stair turns out of sight.
