About this piece

A partly open wooden double door frames a narrow flight of worn stone steps, with a shuttered window visible above. Strong sunlight picks out the pale surround and ochre-stained walls, while diamond latticework and recessed panels hold deeper shadows. The vertical composition draws the eye across the bright threshold into a passage both intimate and inviting.

The story

Late July light rests on the pale threshold and reaches up the uneven steps. One door stands open, its dark lattice turned toward the sunlit wall beyond. Flaking plaster and worn stone give every surface a different grain. The stairway bends out of sight, leaving the next few steps to the imagination.
