The story

On this late-November day, a narrow band of gold holds between the cloud bank and the sea. Along the pier, lamps mark the distance in diminishing points of color. Water gathers around the pilings and softens their reflections into blue and amber streaks. At the edge of the sand, each wash of surf leaves a pale sheen, then slips away.
