Where Stone Holds Light

About this piece

Layered walls of a narrow sandstone canyon sweep around a bright opening, their finely striated surfaces shifting from luminous orange to muted violet. Overlapping curves and broad areas of shadow give the vertical composition a sculptural depth, balancing radiant color with an enveloping stillness.

The story

September daylight enters through a narrow opening and gathers on the inner curves of the stone. Orange flares along one wall while violet traces the shaded ridges opposite. The eye follows each fine line until it disappears beneath another fold. Within these enclosing forms, the passing day becomes a small brightness held against the dark.
