Where Stone Holds Light

About this piece

Undulating sandstone walls enclose a narrow canyon, their fine layers illuminated in orange, rust, and muted violet. The vertical composition draws the eye from the shadowed passage toward a sliver of blue sky, while a shaft of sunlight reveals the depth between the sculpted surfaces.

The story

September light enters through the narrow opening and gathers on the stone. Each curved ledge catches a different intensity, from bright amber to the subdued purple of deep shade. Above, the sky remains a small, clear blue presence. Below, a pale shaft reaches into the passage, and the immense walls seem to fold around it.
