Where Stone Holds Light

About this piece

Layered sandstone walls sweep around a narrow opening, their finely striated surfaces shifting from deep rust to pale violet and luminous orange. Dark overhangs enclose the composition while daylight illuminates the inner curves, giving the canyon a sculptural presence and a feeling of sheltered stillness.

The story

September daylight enters the narrow space above and warms the far wall to amber. Within the shadows, fine lines run through the sandstone like folds in heavy cloth. One ridge rises against the glow, dividing the illuminated hollow from the darker foreground. The season registers here as light on stone, held briefly within curves that seem to keep their own time.
