About this piece

A breaking wave fills the frame with turquoise water and finely scattered white spray, rising behind dark, wet rocks. Bright highlights pick out the foam and rugged stone, while ochre patches interrupt the cool palette. The tight composition excludes the horizon, concentrating attention on the contrast between airborne water and the weight of rock.

The story

Late November finds the shore enclosed in blue and white. Water strikes the rocks and opens into a curtain of droplets, briefly obscuring everything beyond them. Foam gathers in the hollows and spills over the dark ledges, tracing their uneven edges. Within the rush, small amber patches remain visible on the stone.
