Where the Dunes Open

About this piece
A sand-dusted boardwalk descends between weathered posts and rope railings toward a narrow opening onto the sea. Green and gold dune grasses stand against the largely gray wood, water, and clouded sky, while strong sunlight casts diagonal shadows across the planks. The converging fences lend the coastal scene a quiet sense of invitation.
The story
July light catches the grasses along the dunes, picking out green blades and dry golden stems. The boardwalk offers a narrow passage, its worn planks partly covered by pale sand. Rope hangs between the posts, and tall seed heads lean over the path without closing it. Ahead, the sea appears through the opening, a level gray band beyond the bright tangle of growth.
