Scarlet heliconia bracts alternate along an upright stem, their sharply tapered forms set against luminous green foliage. Diagonal stems cross the foreground, while shallow depth of field softens the surrounding leaves into patches of green and gold.
The story
I found my frame in the contrast between the red bracts and the green surrounding them. Light passing through the foliage made some edges glow, while others held a deeper shade of scarlet. I kept the crossing stems in view; they belonged to the tangled space that had drawn me closer. Through the lens, the plant became a series of precise gestures, each pointed tip reaching into a different pocket of light.
