About this piece

A low sun illuminates bands of orange and gold beneath a canopy of dark clouds. Breaking surf and intricate white foam fill the foreground, while wet shoreline rock carries the sky’s warm reflections toward the viewer.

The story

I framed the low sun between the dark weight of the clouds and the restless surface of the sea. In front of me, each wave spread a new pattern across the rock, briefly catching the orange light before dissolving into white foam. I wanted to hold those two rhythms together: the broad, almost still expanse of the horizon and the water breaking close at hand, never arranging itself quite the same way twice.
