About this piece

A massive banyan fills the frame, its branching limbs radiating from a deeply folded central trunk. Daylight filters through dense foliage, tracing the bark and revealing a network of aerial roots above the leaf-strewn ground.

The story

I stood beneath the spreading limbs and tried to follow a single branch from the trunk to the light. Each turn led my eye into another crossing, another curtain of leaves. Near the ground, roots stretched across the earth while others descended from above, blurring the boundary between support and growth. I framed the tree from below, leaving a little earth visible so that its extraordinary reach still had somewhere to begin.
