Golden light breaks through layered clouds above Fort Lauderdale Beach, illuminating the ocean behind a snowman dressed for fishing. The sculpture’s outstretched arms and curved rod lend a playful counterpoint to the upright palms, wooden beach sign, and white lifeguard tower.
The story
I framed the beach from across the road, letting the fishing rod arc into the clouded sky. The snowman stood with its arms spread wide, dressed for a season that seemed to belong somewhere else. Beyond it, ships marked the horizon and golden light opened between banks of gray. I liked how the scene held both spectacle and ordinary detail: a green traffic signal, a quiet lifeguard tower, and this improbable fisherman greeting the sea.
