About this piece

A sailing catamaran sits just right of center, its pale sails rising against bands of orange and gold beneath a broad canopy of dark cloud. Birds punctuate the sky, while the textured blue-gray sea provides a cool counterpoint to the light along the horizon.

The story

I framed the boat beneath the dark clouds, leaving room for the sea below. The sails held a muted light of their own against the orange sky, and the people on deck appeared small beside them. Birds crossed the open spaces around the mast. What drew me in was the contrast: so much color above, so little of it in the water, and the boat suspended between those two worlds.
