Weathered planks and converging railings draw the eye toward a small pavilion at the end of an ocean pier. Warm lamplight and saturated pink tones cross the timber, contrasting with blue water and the broad, sculptural clouds overhead.
The story
I stood in the middle of the pier, letting the rails lead my eye toward the small gathering at its end. The lamps made warm islands along the boards, while the sea held a cooler blue. Above it all, the clouds seemed too large for the narrow walkway beneath them. I framed the grain of the wood as carefully as the sky, wanting both the distance and the ground under my feet to remain present.
