About this piece

An upward view through a slot canyon sets sweeping, finely striated rock walls around an irregular opening of blue sky. Light turns exposed surfaces orange and gold while recessed folds deepen into violet and burgundy, lending the vertical composition both enclosure and release.

The story

On this September day, the sky appears as a slender opening between immense folds of stone. Light catches the ridges, tracing their edges in gold before falling away into purple shadow. The rock seems to gather around the blue, its layered surfaces holding the eye close. Above, the clear sky offers a quiet measure of distance.
