About this piece
Light passing through a palm frond reveals fine parallel veins and scattered ochre-brown markings. In Mike Gedj’s close framing, the leaflets form a repeating diagonal structure, their luminous greens interrupted by narrow openings onto the blurred background.
The story
I let the frond fill the frame until the space beyond it became little more than pale circles of light. What held my attention was not an unmarked leaf, but the small brown spots and golden edges scattered across the green. Seen this closely, each leaflet offered a different pattern. I wanted to keep both things in view: the clarity of its long lines and the irregular marks that made this particular frond worth looking at.
