About this piece

Thick limbs radiate from a densely textured central trunk, filling the frame with intersecting curves and luminous green foliage. Daylight filters through the canopy, contrasting the intricate overhead growth with the exposed roots and stony earth below.

The story

I stood beneath the spreading limbs and looked for a frame that could hold their reach. Each branch led my eye outward, then back toward the gathered roots and folds of the trunk. Above me, small openings in the leaves let daylight through; below, roots crossed the bare earth. I wanted the photograph to keep both sensations together: the weight of the tree and the lightness of its canopy.
